So you've decided it's time for a change in 2009! You've made your New Year's Resolutions and have taken the first to steps to achieve them:

  • You have written your goals down and worded them in a positive way, since you know: the old saying "Goals that are not written down are just wishes" is only too true. You're well aware of the fact that according to statistics only about three to five percent of the population actually takes the time to write their goals down. And you definitely what to be amongst that percentage.
  • You were absolutely precise and specific when writing your gaols down and established a detailed action plan including an exact time line.

Now it's time to take the four remaining steps on your personal Goal setting and achieving Quick list that will guarantee this year you will achieve your New Year's Resolutions for 2009!

By the way, making New Year's Resolutions has a long tradition. In fact, more than 2000 years ago the Romans named the first month of the year January after Janus, god of the beginnings and ancient symbol for resolutions. Janus was said to have two faces and at midnight on December 31 the Romans imagined Janus looking back on the old year with one face and at the same time forward to the future with the other.

So seize the momentum, sit down and work on the final steps to achieve your goals:

3. Visualise yourself achieving your goal!

If you want to buy a car, see yourself driving it and shifting gears. Feel its power, hear its engine roaring. The more you can visualise your goal, the easier it is for you to focus and commit yourself to achieving it, the faster it becomes reality.

4. Set realistic goals!

If you aim to obtain an MBA within a year, are working full time and have a family you like to spend time with chances are you might not your achieve your goal. Avoid frustration and plan realistically.

However, keep in mind: Even though goals should be realistic and achievable, don't hesitate to set the bar high. Les Brown, one of the top motivational speakers in the US, once said: "Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you'll land among the stars." You will be amazed how inspired and motivated you are by your goals.

5. Review your goals daily!

Persistence and ongoing focus are key factors when it comes to achieving goals. Keeping your goals present in your mind will help you to stay on track, focused and motivated. How do you do that, you ask? Have your goals on display where you can constantly see them: On your desk, in your kitchen, let it become your screen saver or place mat.

You might also want to think about them shortly before you go to sleep or early in the morning. At that time our subconscious mind is very alert and takes in "orders" that program into our thoughts, actions and feelings. This will increase the chances of achieving your dreams.

6. Get support!

Achieving your goals is not always easy but certainly worth it! Get as much help as possible! Create an encouraging environment that makes it easy for you to accomplish your goals. Surround yourself with like minded, positive people who are as committed to improve their lives as you are.
